1. Labor was too busy fighting amongst itself and that took the gloss off its legislative/ economic achievements - "they kicked themselves out"

2. Labor Government was too progressive for the country with perhaps too many changes in too short a time for the vested interests of mining and other business to cope with

3. The Liberals exploited this and managed, aided by the media it has to be said, to convince the public that it was a 'bad' government
